Learning Target Moments: Every lab and formative assessment is centered around a learning target. So every activity the students do (represented by Mario and the various bad guys he must defeat and ? boxes he must get) will help them to reach their final assessment (the castle my road map). There is not one thing in my assessment that simply takes up time; everything has a specific purpose and learning target.
Formative Assessment Moments: Formative assessment is constant throughout this unit. Class discussions, and science notebooks are used weekly to monitor student understanding. After these are read I will have a greater understanding of what students get and what they are confused about it. KWLs or Exit Slips are done daily to see students got out of the lesson and what they are confused on.
Stops/Pauses: If students look like they are confused or lost I would stop the lesson. As a teacher you can tell by listening and reading students' body language. I will use this to determine when I need to stop and reexplain.
Step-backs: These are done as needed when students are stuck on a particular topic. Evidence is gathered from notebooks, KWLs, Exit Slips, and discussion. When majority of the class is stuck then we will step back and cover the material in a different way. When the majority understands we will move on and I will work with students who are still stuck individually.
